You should see the other guy.. by jason-latino You should see the other guy.. by jason-latino
Okay so here's the second submission as :icondocshaner: week continues. For some reason my Jonah Hex looks a lot like Robert Mitcham from "Night of the Hunter."

Great work! Wasn't there a Jonah Hex movie with Eastwood in it? I've been trying to find it if it exists but I don't know the title of it. Excellent job!

Thanks for the :+fav:. I don't know about that movie though, sounds a little suspect. Check Eastwood's filmography on imdb.com I guess.

You've really nailed the Eastwood look here, ...and the hat actually, as I remember it from the best period for the comic (late 70's). The fitted 'Gray Coat' is great too; they got it right for Charlie Prince's coat too in the 3:10 to Yuma remake.

Nice work!

Thanks. He really does have the Eastwood sneer doesn't he? If I hadn't just watched Dirty Harry this weekend I might not have noticed myself.

I thought the remake was just okay, but honestly we're so starved for westerns these days I'm not complaining.

Seriously, we need a new Clint Eastwood - or high plains drifter type. 3:10 was more than decent, but not much. Crowe is way overrated - I guess they were thinking of him for Jonah, but more likely Bale will get the part. (I would've liked Michael Beihn in there - he was superb in Tombstone).
Speaking of good, but a bit overrated - Iron Man. The direction that Nolan and Favreau are taking with supe's movies is night and day better than the rest - but ...sigh,.. still flawed.

Dead on commentary. Dune was also a good example of the flaws that come out pitting quality (faithful story-telling) against commercial success. In my 20's, I really thought Herbert was the uber author of all time (I'm just a bit better read now - but I wont take too much away from him). Having read a lot of the novels before the movie, I really thought it was a bad idea to attempt a single movie (even 3hours) treatment of even the first book. No surprise it bombed financially and critically (for the most part). I was blown away, however, by the set design and casting. It was ';proof' to me that when an author creates such a vivid world and lucid, complex characters - it's almost impossible for the visual tone to not transfer faithfully. (LOTR worked visually for the same reason - but Jackson knew it had to be a part series, and treated the production much more wholistically).

Yeah I've been thinking about the superhero movies lately and how they're entertaining but don't really seem to capture the characters fully. I think a lot of this has to do with the serialized nature of our heroes' traditional medium.

When you're coming out monthly and you have a writer willing to sit on a character for a year or two, you get to see real character development rather than the flash in a pan character revelations that pepper Hollywood. This isn't a a jab at the industry, it's just that their form of storytelling lasts only 2-3 hours tops so writers almost have to resort to a well-known bag of tricks to make a character dynamic.

Oh well. I think it was Tom Brevoort who once said, "no matter what you think of the movies, it doesn't harm your enjoyment of the comics." Meanwhile, as far as Hollywood goes, we can still cross our fingers and whisper the mantra of any Cubs fan, "things will be better next year."

You've got a bold shading style. I like that.

And anyone who has the guts to draw Jonah Hex is okay in my book.

Thank you, if you like this you should check out Darwyn Cooke's stuff. He'll actually be doing a done-in-one for Jonah Hex coming up soon, and New Frontier is a must read.

Great work Jason. Love the cigar hand. And he does look a bit like Mitchum, but it works. I think the scarring is supposed to be on the other side of his face, but regardless there's some really nice black vs. white play here buddy.

Yeah, when I use the webcam it automatically flips the image. So the scanned version will fix that.
